Athena Project, which empowers women through the arts, has a new program — Artfully Minded Open Mic Nights & Workshops. These events are for 6th to 10th grade girls, non-binary and trans interested in learning and/or performing art forms such as spoken word, poetry, music, acting/monologues, play writing, stand-up and dance.
This new program is part of Girls Create, which empowers girls to lead and effect change in themselves and others through creative learning. This program seeks to encourage girls to tap into their creativity, gain confidence, and do what they love in the arts.
Events run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Professionals from the community teach a 50-minute workshop and provide guidance during the creative process. At about 7:35 p.m., there’s an open mic performance where students share their work, whether from that night’s workshop or other projects.
Each open mic spot is for 5 minutes and there are seven performance spots. Friends and family are invited to watch the shows.
Upcoming dates are Monday, October 9 (poetry) and Monday, November 13 (comedy).
While the Open Mic performance is open to the public, space is limited so a reservation is required to attend. See the schedule and sign up here.
