Actually, it commemorates the victory of an outnumbered Mexican army over the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. These days, May 5 has become a celebration of Latino culture. For 2024, most celebrations will be over the weekend, May 4 or 5.
