It took a while, but the Denver Public Library has found a way to help those who desperately need a computer and internet access. Even though DPL libraries remain closed for in-person services (like using a computer station), it is rolling out a FREE laptop “rental” service for use by anyone in the community, no library card required.
As first reported by Denverite, on Tuesday, DPL set up a stand outside its Central branch on 13th and Broadway. Tuesdays through Fridays from 12 to 3 p.m., anyone will be able to check out computer workstations for 30 minutes at a time.
The system will also be rolling out laptop rental stands at four additional DPL branches starting Tuesday, July 21. Each location will offer four to eight walk-up workstations placed six feet apart, each outfitted with a Chromebook.
Patrons can book the computers on a first-come, first-served basis, no library card necessary. The stands will also offer free black and white printing. Hours and days vary by location, with some branches offering the service on Saturdays, so be sure to check the schedule below.
You may have to stand in line for a while, so be sure to bring water, wear a face mask and don a hat or sunscreen.
Not only is this service a particular need for those who find themselves homeless, but also those without internet access who have no other way to check email, apply for jobs, find community resources, look for medical help or receive news and other important information.
When libraries shuttered, this pipeline of information was cut off. And, as many have discovered the digital divide is wide.
MHOTC sends a big thank you to DPL for coming up with a way to help patrons gain internet access!
