12 Tips to Win at Trivia
- Assemble a well-rounded team, with different areas of expertise. One member may be into Broadway, while another can recite the name of every British monarch. Some folks love sports, others world history. For ultimate success, mix it up.
- Find teammates of different ages. At least 15 years apart is a good rule of thumb so everyone has their own frame of reference.
- Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to team trivia. There may not be enough room at the table or find it hard to reach a consensus. Keep your team to about 6 people.
- Designate a teammate to write down each question word for word. And don’t be afraid to ask the host to repeat the question. Some will, some won’t, but it never hurts to ask if you need clarification.
- Let everyone chime in with an answer. Often a quick discussion can trigger the correct answer, as teammates hash things out.
- Become a regular. You’ll get a feel for the kind of questions a particular host asks.
- Never leave an answer blank. If you have no idea, guess. You might get lucky. If you truly have no idea, write down something…anything. Because trivia night is all about fun.
- Take all the time that’s allotted to you, but do follow your gut instincts.
- Keep up with the news and read the cheesy magazines you find in waiting rooms or while in the checkout line.
- Study up on some basic information that tends to be visited a lot in trivia, like U.S. presidents, the Periodic Table of Elements, and major sports events such as the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, Wimbledon, and the Olympics.
- Arrive early. Some spots may be better than others for clearly hearing the host.
- Spend some money at the brewery or bar. Buy some food and hold off on the drinks until trivia has ended. Tip your bartender or waitstaff. OK, that won’t help you win but it’s the nice thing to do.
