Whiskey from Strangers, the latest original show from Grapefruit Lab,weaves personal storytelling and Denver mythology into a live concept album. The show opens on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Buntport Theater, and runs for two weekends with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., plus two Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. In order to make this production accessible, regardless of ability to pay, tickets are all name-your-price.
Live music and Denver lore weave together in this new hybrid performance.
As a Teacup Gorilla album-release concert is overtaken by Denver mythology, the bandmates are forced to contend with friendship, loss, identity, memory, and a cursed pool that “makes men soft.”
What does that mean? Could it be the hot springs in Ouray, or the waterfall at Casa Bonita? And why is there a kiddie pool on stage?
This is a love letter to our city. To friendships that last… and friendships that don’t. A queer and heartfelt reflection on friendship and change — in a city that’s not quite west, but also not midwest.
The show is also an album release for the new Teacup Gorilla EP. You’ll hear all four songs from the album, along with brand new material written just for the live show. Music and story are based on the novel Riding SideSaddle, by Miriam Suzanne.
Grapefruit Lab is a performance company founded by long-term collaborators Julie Rada, Miriam Suzanne and Kenny Storms. The three have collaborated under various names — finally forming Grapefruit Lab with a vision for mixed-media shows that engage the community.
