The Lowrider Show and Shine is a moment to celebrate with community the artistry and presence of lowriders in Denver, and the opening of the new exhibit Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion at the Denver Art Museum. A family-friendly FREE event is set for Sunday, July 9, 2023, at DAM from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It features lowriders, local vendors, food, music, and FREE general admission to the museum all day.
Outside the museum will offer a day full of activities, including local artisans and food vendors, a photo booth (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and award-winning lowrider vehicles.
Inside the museum galleries, visitors of all ages will have a chance to have fun with hands-on activities including:
- “Skating” with miniature finger skateboards in a scaled-down skatepark, modeled after Federal.
- Making customizable miniature paper lowriders that can be posed and “driven” around a model.
- Exploring an interactive map of metro Denver highlighting points of significance specific to skateboarding and lowriders, alongside which visitors can add their own reactions and stories.
The exhibition, on view July 9 to September 24, 2023, highlights how Southwestern Latinx and Indigenous artists express identity, pride, and a sense of community by transforming vehicles—such as lowriders and skateboards—associated with the Western U.S.
Sunday, July 9 is also a Community Free Day so you can check out the DAM exhibits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
