With many in-person Colorado motor vehicle services shuttered and long lines building outside of the DMVs that are open, it can be really frustrating to register your car, renew a license plate and more. And let’s face it, time is money. Now the state is partnering with AAA Colorado to increase consumer choice, shorten wait times and keep Coloradans safe. The solution: Colorado MV Express.
Back in 2016, though a partnership with AAA Colorado, DMV kiosks were installed in select locations around the state. In 2019 alone, 235,000 motor vehicle transactions took place across 40 kiosks in 27 Colorado counties. This week, Gov. Jared Polis signed a law making the kiosks permanent.
Besides making the kiosk program permanent, the new law expands the suite of services accessible by kiosk to include driver license renewals, motor vehicle registration and titling, the issuance of license plate tabs and duplicates and voter registration, among others.
It also opens up the same services to mobile applications. Find a kiosk near you here.
“There are a million wonderful things to do in Colorado. Waiting in line at the DMV just isn’t one of them,” said Skyler McKinley, director of government affairs for AAA Colorado.
“When we introduced DMV kiosks in 2016, we made it possible for folks to renew their tags without having to take a number. By making more services available by kiosk – and now, though mobile app – we think we might just be able to eliminate the DMV line altogether.”
Do note that there is an additional fee: In addition to your renewal cost, there is a service fee for every vehicle renewed at the kiosk — $3.95 at kiosks in King Soopers and $3 at kiosks in all other locations. Additionally, there is a 2.15 to 2.4% fee to pay via credit or debit card, or a $0.50 fee to pay via check. There is no additional charge for cash payments (where available).
The bill at once empowers Coloradans to access government services when and how they expect, including at several 24/7 locations, many of which are located inside King Soopers stores.
