Boulder has a lot of cool scientific research facilities. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is just one of them. NCAR hosts a number of lectures and special events throughout the year that are open to the public. Some are in-person, others are virtual and others are hybrid. In-person events at the facility usually require reservations. Here’s what is coming up:
NSF NCAR Explorer Series Lecture “Supercooled liquid clouds: Navigating the dangers of aircraft icing”
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., the NSF NCAR Explorer Series will host “Supercooled liquid clouds: Navigating the dangers of aircraft icing” with scientists Julie Haggerty and Dan Adriaansen. Join us for this lecture on in-flight icing scenarios in person at the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab (FREE; reservations required), or online. This event is open to the public and recommended for ages 12+.
NSF NCAR Explorer Series Special Event: Gathered in Darkness – 2024 total solar eclipse documentary premiere
On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the NSF NCAR Explorer Series will host “Gathered in Darkness” a 2024 total solar eclipse documentary premiere, followed by a panel and Q&A with scientists Amir Caspi, Sarah Kovac, and Paul Bryans, and filmmaker Daniel Zietlow.
Total solar eclipses. While these events can evoke feelings of awe and wonder, they also present a unique opportunity for communities to engage in scientific inquiry. In this Explorer Series special event, watch for the film premiere of Gathered in Darkness, a documentary produced about the Citizen CATE 2024 mission, which united communities across the United States to capture over 47,000 images of the corona, our Sun’s wispy outer atmosphere that’s normally hidden.
Afterwards, hear from the lead scientists and filmmaker about documenting a large-scale community science project, and get a sneak peak at some of the data and how it can help us better understand solar storms, solar magnetism, and their impact on us here on Earth.
Join in person at the NSF NCAR Mesa Lab (FREE; reservations required), or online. This free event is open to the public and recommended for ages 12+. Reserve your seats early as they expect lots of interest!
